Wood is a combustible material and when it catches fire, carbonisation causes a reduction in its size.

Amonn produces the intumescent paints Amotherm Wood WB and WSB specially designed for protecting wooden structures from fire.

The fire-resistance of wooden structures can only be verified through analysis in compliance with the criteria set out in the European codes EN1991-1-2 and EN1995-1-2, making a technical assessment enabling the thickness of the protective coating
to be measured, taking into account the following parameters:

  • resistant sections
  • static framework and loads
  • type of partition
  • carbonisation speed
An important parameter for checking fire-resistance is carbonisation speed that specifies the thickness of the carbonised material in relation to time. A reduction in this speed makes it possible to increase the fire-resistance of the structural element, limiting reduction of the resistant section.

AMONN has tested our Amotherm Wood paints according to the standard EN 13381-7: “Test methods for determining the contribution to the fire resistance of structural members - Applied protection to timber members” and we have calculated the contribution made by the protective coating to reducing the carbonisation speed.
